14 Reasons We’re Sweet on Small Business

By ngoriel, SBA Official

 Published: February 12, 2016

Small businesses are the heart of America’s economy. This Valentine’s Day, the SBA is sending small business owners this valentine with 14 reasons why we love small business. Small businesses in the United States:

1) Care about their communities – The 28 million small businesses in the U.S. contribute directly to local communities.
2) Provide opportunities – Small businesses make up 99.7 percent of U.S. employer firms.
3) Create jobs – Two out of every three net new jobs created in the U.S. are from small businesses.
4) Grow the global economy – 97.7 percent of exporters are small firms.
5) Represent the diversity of America – Last year, SBA achieved record lending of $23.5 billion under our flagship 7(a) loan program, with loans up 23 percent to minorities.
6) Value military experience – One out of every 10 small business owners is a veteran.
7) Contribute to sales – Small businesses account for 54 percent of all U.S. sales.
8) Employ about half of the workforce – Small businesses employ about 56.1 million of the nation’s private workforce.
9) Produce goods and services for our government– In fiscal year 2014, $91.7 billion were awarded to small business contractors, resulting in the support of approximately 550,000 total jobs.
10) Lead the way for female entrepreneurs –According to Census data from December 2015, women’s ownership rates are up 27 percent, employing 8 million workers.
11) Direct local industries – Health care and social assistance; accommodation and food services; and retail trade were the three industries with the most small business employment.
12) Drive innovation – Small patenting firms produce 16 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.
13) Create opportunities for flexible work and lifestyles – Home-based businesses account for 52 percent of all small businesses.
14) Inspire us – Small business owners work countless hours, sacrifice their personal time, improve their communities and follow their dreams.

Did your business suffer economic loss due to this summer's extreme heat and drought?

DISASTER NEWS

Economic Injury Loans for Small Businesses
                                   S
BA Disaster Assistance – Field Operations Center- East – 101 Marietta Street, NW, Suite 700, Atlanta, GA 30303

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans available in South Carolina
Following Secretary of Agriculture Disaster Declaration

ATLANTA - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today that federal Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations located in South Carolina as a result of excessive heat and drought beginning on May 1.

This disaster declaration includes the following counties: Abbeville, Aiken, Allendale, Anderson, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Florence, Georgetown, Greenville, Greenwood, Hampton, Horry, Kershaw, Lancaster, Laurens, Lee, Lexington, Marion, Marlboro, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee Orangeburg, Pickens, Richland, Saluda, Spartanburg, Sumter, Union, Williamsburg, and York in South Carolina.

“When the Secretary of Agriculture issues a disaster declaration to help farmers recover from damages and losses to crops, the Small Business Administration issues a declaration to eligible entities affected by the same disaster,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA’s Field Operations Center East in Atlanta.

Under this declaration, the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program is available to eligible
farm-related and nonfarm-related entities that suffered financial losses as a direct result of this disaster.  With the exception of aquaculture enterprises, SBA can not provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers. Nurseries are eligible to apply for economic injury disaster loans for losses caused by drought conditions.

The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates of 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 4 percent for small businesses, with terms up to 30 years.  The SBA determines eligibility based on the size of the applicant, type of activity and its financial resources.  Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.  These working capital loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.  The loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster loan information and application forms may also be obtained by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.  Loan applications can be downloaded from the SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster.  Completed applications should be mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

Completed loan applications must be returned to SBA no later than May 9, 2016.

Taking America’s Largest Seed Fund on the Road

By Javier.Saade, SBA Official News
Originally Published: February 12, 2015

Javier Saade, SBA Assoc. Admin.
Office of Investment and Innovation
At the SBA, we oversee America’s Largest Seed Fund, formally known as the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

These highly competitive programs provide the needed impetus for many advanced technology firms to move from ideation to commercialization, supporting our country’s innovation driven economy.  Since the programs’ inception, there have been over 150,000 awards totaling about $40 billion to help this country’s innovators and de-risk technology investments needed to keep our country competitive.   Annually, thousands of American innovators gain access to $2.5 billion in non-dilutive seed capital through the SBIR/STTR programs. While these programs are national in scope, not all communities have fully utilized this opportunity.

We recognize that American innovation is not restricted by geographic boundaries, and to ensure that all of America’s future innovators are aware of this advantageous funding opportunity, SBA and 11 federal agencies are taking the show on the road and embarking on an 18 state SBIR Road Tour.

The SBIR Road Tour “Seeding America’s Future Innovations”, is a nationally focused outreach initiative targeting advanced technology communities, including women-owned and minority-owned firms, in states that have underutilized this funding opportunity. Over the course of 2015, I am glad to announce that more than 20 individual program managers from the 11 participating agencies will travel by motor coach to convey the non-dilutive technology seed fund opportunity.  Each SBIR Road Tour stop is hosted by a local organization committed to supporting technology-based entrepreneurship, and will provide attendees with a coveted local opportunity to hear directly from federal agency program managers, and meet one-on-one with program decision makers.

The first series will take place the week of March 23rd, with stops in Louisville, KY, Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA, and Columbia, SC.  The next stop is the week of April 27th in Long Beach, MS, Ruston, LA, Oklahoma City, OK, Wichita, KS, and Columbia, MO.  Trips to the North Central region is planned for July and the last to the Northwest in August.

It’s like a rock band tour with a twist - the rock stars are America’s innovators and we want to give you a stage to explore these amazing programs.

If you’re a small technology firm, innovator, scientist or researcher, I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Since the SBIR/STTR programs inception, it has provided seed funding to companies including Qualcomm, iRobot, Symantec, and Genzyme. Through this outreach initiative, I am confident we will continue to expand on the program’s success, and am excited to see what innovation we seed next.

For more information on the SBIR Road Tour and the SBIR program visit www.sbir.gov.

Entrepreneurship and Technology .... In 2014, They Can't Be Separated

    Carol A. Daly, Business Consultant
    © November, 2014

I participated in a professional discussion group recently where the point was painfully made that it’s still not completely understood that technology and entrepreneurship are no longer exclusive of one another.   At this point and forever into the future, business development, technology production, and app development will be joined for better or worse, and we cannot deny that.  You don’t go backwards from technological progress – it’s just not an option.  If you’re going to be competitive in business you need to embrace what will certainly be commonplace in every field in the near future; and you need to include planning to keep up with technology trends in your long-term business plan.  Facts to be considered:

In the field of healthcare: Technology is now being used routinely to keep doctors connected in order to better refer patients for specialized care; to optimize care coordination and medical results between various healthcare providers; medical diagnoses are available online through video conferencing; artificial skin is being developed through the creation of laser stem cells in 3D printers; and in at least one case I’ve heard about, a doctor has utilized technology in a way that even Google may not have foreseen, using the Google Glass while in surgery.  While some see Google Glass as an expensive “toy,” this doctor saw a window of opportunity.

In the restaurant field:  Many restaurants now offer customers the opportunity to order take-out online for delivery or pick-up; some also offer an app for your cell phone to make reservations quickly and easily; upscale restaurants in large metropolitan areas offer touch screen digital menus at each table that allow you to order, request your bill, pay the bill and even fill in a review of your dining experience right there at your table with no assistance from a waiter.   All of that is for the convenience of the customer.  The benefit for the restaurant owner is also being noted as they’re able to program their technology with up-sell opportunities like making appetizer and dessert recommendations complete with hard-to-resist photos, and provide a better over-all experience for diners, creating more word-of-mouth referrals and better reviews.

In the grocery/retail industry:  It would be difficult not to notice the changes that have taken place in the retail environment already, although the changes have come about incrementally so as not to overwhelm shoppers.   And customers have embraced them completely for the most part.  From the customers’ perspective, it started with branded in-store discount cards, then moved on to easy debit/credit card payment options, then on to email marketing and newsletters offering coupons based on those items you buy regularly (which they identify through the use of your in-store discount card).  They have not only identified a target market through technology, but taken it right down to targeting individuals’ personal shopping habits.   For the past 15 years at least, retailers have been selling online and shipping all over the world.  That’s not even news anymore.  And more recently, customers also have the option of ordering specialty groceries online for shipment by the case; or ordering from some local stores online for pick up on the way home.   It doesn’t get much easier than that.

In the world of baking and confections:  Changes are made in this industry every day, but most go unnoticed by the end users of the products.   Bakery giants can point out new equipment that speeds production or allows for longer-lasting freshness; or advances in producing specialty products for ethnic and foreign markets.  But something that really caught my attention recently was the use of a new piece of equipment … the Sugar Lab from 3D Systems.  This is an actual printer designed to create ornate three-dimensional sugar designs for cake toppers, unusual sugar cube designs, and other sweet confections, sour candies and geometric peppermints that satisfy both the sweet tooth and the eye.   Some of these candy samples are now available in limited quantities through Cubify.com, which sells a variety of 3D printers to create everything from foods to toys.

In agriculture:   Coming to a farm near you soon!   Business Insider reports that big changes are underway in this crucially important industry.
    • Air & soil sensors are being introduced in 2015 to enable a real time monitoring of farm, forest or body of water conditions;
    • Equipment telematics are expected to go mainstream in 2016 and be financially viable in 2017.  This will allow mechanical farm equipment (such as tractors) to send a warning that a failure is likely to occur soon.
    •  Livestock biometrics means that collars with GPS, RFID and biometrics can automatically identify and relay vital information about livestock in real time.  This is still in a developmental stage, but is expected to be mainstreamed and financially viable by 2020.
    • Crop sensors:   This high-resolution sensor can inform application equipment of the correct amounts of fertilizer needed for conditions.  Optical sensors or drones are able to identify crop health across the field (i.e.: using infra-red light).  These will be scientifically viable in 2015, mainstream in 2018; and be financially viable in 2019.
    •  Infrastructure health sensors: Can be used for monitoring vibrations and material conditions in buildings, bridges, factories, farms and other infrastructure. Coupled with an intelligent network, these sensors will feed crucial information back to maintenance crews or robots.

Dozens of other technologies like robotic farm swarms, vertical farms, and precision farming to name a few, are being fine-tuned and scheduled for wide-scale implementation far into the next decade.

I could go on to touch every business-type, but hopefully this is enough to awaken the disbelievers or those who simply haven't given the role of technology in our lives much thought.  If you are among those, I encourage you to to embrace technology in its many forms.  If you are starting a new business, or looking to expand sales and production in an existing business, don’t ignore the writing on the wall.  Technology is here to stay, and you can learn about, use it, and reap its benefits, or you may have to face an awful truth within the next decade, and realize that you've missed your opportunity to ride your industry’s boat into a very profitable future!
